Howdy!

I got my PR approved for Canada via Express entry. I have till May 2018 to mark my presence in Canada. Decided best route will be by car.
So my dilemma is I have a new car and still doing payments on it. Inquired and Canada requires a clearance on USA custom side of the title (e.g. per my understanding they will revoke registration on USA side and that will allow me to register the car in Canada).

now how to do this:

- If I make an entry in Canada then immigration dept. in Canada will send me back to USA side to clear the registration and that will put me in a 10 year ban situation. I am sure if the custom officer is a smart ass then he will inquire about my immigration status in USA.

-I was think of getting AP and using that as a point of white flag to approach US customs, hence they will not question my TPS presence in USA. But this won't be accomplished from what i read on several threads on this forum regarding AP.

-Finding a an approved broker that deals in import/export of vehicles. Still wondering if my immigration status will be an issue on the paperwork with customs.

-Still paying the car so worst case scenario is to return the car to the dealership and take a loss on it. From what i read on google most dealerships are willing to take a car back if a trade is involved...they don't offer a simple buy back.

Any ideas how to approach this? any input would be appreciated.

thank you!

Congratulations on getting your PR!

While I don’t have any knowledge since I didn’t bring my car, you can probably refer to this forum:

Hope this helps

Thanks will have to use that message board to explain my scenario. Fearful of the idea of going to US customs with my foreign passport and TPS status. Worst case sell this car. Thanks again

Check out the 2nd link that I posted as well - it may have some useful info.

On another note - I ended up renting a car and driving to Canada as well....instead of flying. Long story.

It was terrifying but everything went smoothly. Don’t worry - hopefully you'll be fine as well Good luck!

FYI when i went to drop my parents 2 years ago at the border I had to rent a car as well...instead of them flying. Their story is a long one as well lol.

Posted my inquiry on that forum. Very helpful and thankful for your suggestions. Since we are being honest lol:

My car in question is a 2018 subaru forester...I think i am a bit attached to it. Still owe $22.5 k and the dealership is willing to buy back for $19.5k. and come to find out that insurance is a bit expensive in Canada...and rates tend to be higher the further north you move to Canada. Plus the concept of the car being duty free tax might not apply on mine since Subaru is 100% made and assembled in Japan. So I am going to say adios to it and hopefully next week I will settle that aspect with the dealership. At this point I just want to leave USA...tired of the Corporate job and stress. And the life without a goal or sure destiny.

So the next step is Car, apartment move out notice, letter of resignation to my current employer and most likely I will fly to Bellingham and family will pick me from there.

Thanks again for your suggestions.

I'd just sell it at a loss when it's close to moving and starting all over there. Think of it as renting it while you're here.

You have a chance to flee and escape the damnation that most of us wish that could escape. Yet you’re jut worried about a car. Run away and look no back.
