Its pretty clear that the biggest enemy of the latino is other latinos. While I do feel a little bit of disappointment with the outcome I am filled with a sense of hope, optimism, Schadenfreude, and sadness at what will happen to the innocent caught in between this mess.

For now, I would say its time to save as much money as possible. Update/Renew passports and keep a sense of optimism. Sure, I would like to see beingoflight be right just once and trump somehow does a deal for us, but being realistic I don't think it will happen. Who knows anymore really?

The hope

What also won't happen is mass deportations because that is campaign bluster designed to get people out to vote and the reality is the country depends on illegal immigrant labor and its an undeniable fact. Without the illegal labor food prices, housing prices, and everything following those supply chains will increase in price without an associated increase in wages. So I don't think they will actually follow through, but who knows this race has defied expectations. The UK tried some of this and it just led to supply chain collapse as eggs were not available in many locations. Their answer to this problem is "wages will adjust." Right. Like they have during this inflationary time? When have you ever seen a corporation raise wages because their employees are struggling. No, that money is reserved for wall st.

If the worst comes to worst, and we do get kicked out I won't really feel all that sad and this is kind of a sour grapes moment but it can only become positive on the long term. I won't have to renew anymore and I will get to pick a new country to live in. These last 5 or so years I've spent time gaining high-value skills and I even got to attend a top 5 university for grad school, and got to work one of the most coveted jobs in the country. I think next stop for me under that scenario is to become a traveler. The Mexi passport is surprisingly good for travel.

The optimism

We might get a deal out of this if Trump tries to overcome the senate filibuster. Somehow our biggest stumbling block has now become our biggest savior. Funny how it cuts both ways. If not, then I might get to pick a new nation to live in and there are some juicy prospects though sure I won't make the same as I will in the states. Money isn't the end all be all to life. Though isn't this something that only those who are comfortable usually say?

The Schadenfreude

This is the sour grapes part. The people voted for this mess will get what they voted for good and hard. Elon has gone as far as to admit that the Trump tariffs will be an economic disaster for the average american. Not that they care about it. They just ignore their lying ears and eyes and listen only to Trump. RFK will ensure a national heath disaster as the weakened herd immunity causes measles and other things to re-appear. So much for the life-saving vaccines. They've spent a good chunk of time demonizing those. Along with other health disasters. Trump will just be trump and probably bankrupt the country like he bankrupted 6 other times including a casino. Lmfao how do you screw up a casino. The government will be ineffective because all government employees will be required to have loyalty to trump over basic competency and merit. I.e. the perfect seeds for corruption.

The Innocent

I am sorry to those of you caught in this mess. I obviously can't do anything about it. You have my undying support and whatever remains of my optimism and $35.
Yes, good summary. Everyone should focus on what they can control and focus on improving your skills and savings. If we get deported then so be it, it's not like US ever accepted us. It's not end of the world and we begin a new chapter.

Trump will definitely ratchet up the deportations hard this time

Especially on criminal migrants, those with DUIs and violent criminal convictions

Also he will seal the border for good!

I say good on both!

But for those who led quiet otherwise law-abiding lives for 10+ years, I say show goes on. Not much to worry.

They got enough DUIs and criminals to catch for years!

Since senate is not totally lost, Trump will have to make a deal

Mark my words, deal will include legalization path for DACA and ONLY for DACA.

What about your parents you may ask?

Well if they're not on DACA they are out of luck amigo!

Nobody cares about "billions" or whatever its costs

USA sent 100's of billions to Ukraine, left 100's of billions of new weapons for taliban

Voters have spoken.

Very poignant post. I would also like to add something, from my own perspective.

Speaking from experience, I would encourage anyone here that if they haven't already planned for an exit, that they begin immediately. Mentally prepare for the idea now, because it will become easier to digest as time goes on. It might even become an appealing option in the near future depending on what the GOP wants to do.

For my entire adult life, I wanted nothing more than to have a steady stream of thoughts that never once had to be interrupted by having to consider my lack of status and how that would impact certain decisions/careers I could do. Doesn’t it suck looking at job listings that are by law USC only but you’re an otherwise perfect candidate? Every single person here knows this feeling. I’m preaching to the choir.

Since I have left the US two years ago, I no longer have that weighted vest around my chest anymore that will randomly tighten if a conversation goes in a direction involving travel, voting, government work etc. My quality of life in a few ways is better now than before (food and healthcare). I haven’t felt this healthy since before I found out that I didn’t have status.

I want to emphatically say to anyone still reading that you can have a very good life in a lot of places around the world, this isn’t the 1950s. No place is perfect, but where I am now feels pretty close, and I would not consider going back to the US even if I was a dual citizen, I value the peace and quiet that can only happen when there isn’t a Trump in the country. I can’t put a value on the freedom of movement that I never used to have before, and frankly the idea of living under DACA is unthinkable now in hindsight. My passport is valid and I can go where I please, like a human with dignity.

It took a little bit of work but I am in a good position now only because I became very serious about considering a different life in a different country, at first conceptually, and later in more concrete terms. I made deliberate decisions with my finances (with an advisor) all the way back in 2014 that would allow me to basically hit an eject button so that I could pack up and go on short notice if necessary. And I am thankful that I did that. I know some users here have quite literally no option to leave and for that you have my absolute sympathy, I wouldn’t wish that on anyone.
