If Utah can do this, why can't left leaning states like New York or California? There's supposed to be much more impetus to do it there.

Having these state proposals arise is good. They pressure the federal government to pass CIR.

Yeah, I ask myself that question too. It seems very bizarre that Utah is a good place for immigration reform, but that's the way it is I guess.

California is in a very good position to do this. While you have anti-immigrant rhetoric, you also obviously have a gigantic immigrant population. Passing laws to allow driving and work would bring in huge amounts of money to the state, as well as reduce crime. With a Democratic controlled State house, two Dem Senators and a Dem Governor .... the time is right.

And, personally, I think if California wasn't part of the U.S., the main loss would be to the Federal Government in the form of billions of dollars in taxes paid ! And that would be money that would come back to the State. Obviously not going to happen ... I'm just pointing out that while the Federal Government does provide some funding and services to the States.... it is a two-way street and the Federal Government should consider that when they make laws that negatively impact the large states based on the massively disproportionate power that small State Senators hold.

I think the big reasons politicians don't want to act is because most illegals are not eligible for social security. They want to collect their taxes, but don't want to give out social security benefits.
