What do you mean? You want local police to ask people about their immigration status when pulled over or if they call for help? That's what these local laws are trying to prevent. This forum is turning more and more into a Trump rally.

It really is, and it's incredibly jarring to see. I guess a sign of the times.

They'll start with simply sowing fear with their presence, but I imagine in any city within 100 miles of the border, they'll escalate this in someway in a few months. Maybe we'll start seeing "random" checkpoints. And just in time for SCOTUS to rule on DACA.

Nothing really wrong with sanctuary cities when they make sure that people reporting crime are not in fear of deportation.

However, what also happens is that they ignore ICE detainers for people who really should be deported due to heinous crimes like murder, rape, sex crimes. Unfortunately the sanctuary city policies have been corrupted to protect serious criminals and let them go free again.

Such as what happened with the Shooting of Kate Steinle.

On November 30, 2017, after five days of deliberations, a jury acquitted García Zárate of all murder and manslaughter charges. He was convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm but that conviction was overturned on appeal on August 30, 2019.[1]

Killed by someone deported FIVE times. With SEVEN felony convictions.
drug charge in Arizona.
felony heroin possession and manufacturing narcotics.
drug conviction
heroin possession in Washington state.

However, as a sanctuary city, San Francisco's "Due Process for All" ordinance[24] restricted cooperation with ICE to only cases where the immigrant had both current violent felony charges and past violent felony convictions; therefore, San Francisco disregarded the detainer and released him.

Under the new ordinance, approved on Tuesday, unless an individual has a prior conviction for murder, sexual assault, trafficking or assault with a deadly weapon, San Francisco authorities would be unable to keep the person in custody based solely on immigration status.

ICE calls its Secure Communities program "a simple and common sense way to carry out ICE's priorities." But supporters of San Francisco's ordinance argue the program discourages undocumented immigrants from reporting crimes out of fear of deportation.

Unfortunately it seems San Francisco screwed up and let him loose on the street because he only had PAST felonies, not CURRENT ones. It's things like these that make republicans hate undocumented.

A few bad apples screw it up for all of us.

I don't think anyone should be held based solely on immigration status. The fact that his past convictions weren't enough to hold him is the issue and that's the rule that needs to be changed.

Not really sure why there are two agencies, CBP and ICE. Perhaps they should be merged.
I live in Detroit, literally CPB walking all over the city. There is no issue.

Because they don't care about the white immigration crossing from Canada.

Many people from outside the Americas get a ticket to the US and sneak into Canada via that route. Canada has a deportation force that'd make the US Republicans squeal in happiness.
