Hmm I am taking the direct approach. I don;t want to go through all that process only to be denied after investing so much time. I usually speak to HR directly and ask about their hiring procedures

Hello everyone!

As of me, here's a little background. I graduated in the spring of 2011 with a bachelor's in Civil Engineering, went straight to grad school, received my EAD mid-September, and (officially) graduated about a month ago with a master's in Structural Engineering.

Since the day I received my EAD, I joined a building committee. One local site will be done in a couple weeks! I've helped with inspection of the construction process and inspection of the structural members. I found a huge defect in one of the structural pre-fabricated members (imagine 200 people on-site walking by it every day and no one caught it!) and grew familiar with how to deal with the different entities responsible for it.

Concurrently, we're working on a full development project! I get to help from the grading plan, to all the administrative work required to obtain every utility to an empty property, to the structural calculations of commercial and residential structures on-site!

My heart rushes with excitement every time I step on-site or step into a meeting and think about the privilege it is to be here now.

With this experience, I've had the opportunity to separately help design small-scale building projects. Sometimes I get called to look at prospective remodels, and sometimes even damaged sites! It's tremendous pressure to be asked something technical, especially when you know you're talking to people with so much on-field experience, and it's the first time you're exposed to it! First straight-out-of-school thing to do is build a mental free-body diagram of the problem in question. That's good, except when you're doing it for every wooden grain, every nail, every minute detail... It doesn't even have to be complicated, but as a professional you're expected to give them a concise answer. Design, analysis, simplifying WHOLE-- LIVE-- structures to numbers on a page-- I love it!

I'll be eligible to apply to take my professional engineering license exam this winter. Can't wait!

We are a distinguished group of individuals that conquers what some people deem impossible feats. Finding a job is just one other phase of our difficult lives. Don't get discouraged! Go head on like you've always done. Take risks like you always do! Stand out!

I hope everyone takes the time to share their experiences about this new phase of life

In some cases this may not be the best way. I don't think interviewing for positions is a waste of time, it is a good way to gain experience in interviewing. Also, once you have your foot in the door, if they really want you they are more likely to research your situation in depth, don't you think?
