I thought it was a rarity, but maybe half the people who've replied to this post are saying that they have DLs, and I'm pretty surprised by that. I live in California, and I believe that it's not possible for me to get one here even though I have a SSN. Did you guys get your DLs from Washington or something?

I'd say my life is a 4/5. I have a (invalid) SSN but no DL, have to earn tuition money under the table while family takes care of the living expenses, and have an okay social life but could be better.

A lot of you guys are saying that you avoid having friends. But it's not as if you have to tell your friends everything. I've been friends with people for years and there are still a ton of things that I don't know about them. If you don't want to tell them that you're undocumented, then tell them white lies about how you're an international student, or a permanent resident, or something. If you have to choose between lying a little and having no friends, you should safe yourself a lot of heartache and just choose to lie.
Back then all we had to do to get a driver's license was to have something proving you are who you say you are (passport). So that's how I got my DL. It expires next year. If everything goes according to plan, I will a degree in hand.

I would rate my situation a 5. The good: I have some friends, I live in a great neighborhood in a high rise with a swimming pool, I make enough money to live a basic life (food/car/health insurance). The bad: I haven't seen my family in years. The longer I live here the more I think about my family and all the things I have missed out on by staying here. It's nice to send your mom a pair of shoes and some nice clothes, but I think in reality she would be happier just to see me and hug me. The worst: All my friends from college have gone on to get jobs paying serious "American" salaries, while I am saving my few dollars to try to brake out of this shadow life.

Haven´t you been in deportation proceedings for a while now? I remember seeing you post about it before. Do you have any idea how much longer you have in the US?

You live with your parents? Then substract 5 automatically.

Although I have SSN, DL, in-state tuition and couple of buddy to drink sometimes, being all alone sucks. Haven't seen my mother in 7 years.
Aw, I´m so sorry about your mom. That really sucks.

A 5 I would say.

I live with my folks, have SSN, DL (altho expiring next year, considering various options now), car, degree and stuck at my current job making $35k for 3.5 years now. On my first day, my boss handed me the I-9 and forgot to ask for my IDs. And now I get to boss around obese USC underlings.

I finally decided to start posting. yay!
I'm currently 17, I'll be 18 in a few months. I'll be graduating in about a week with APs and honors...and right now I have no idea where I'm going to go for college. Since I live in Florida, I haven't found anything. Even if I want to pay out of state, the applications ask for a proof of permanant residancy or student visa. My 2 younger brother's are the only USC. So right now I pretty much feel like I'm at a dead end. I have no DL--hah i don't even know how to drive. Social life- don't really have one, and i've really been dreading the question :"So, where are you going for college?" . I do however, have a very supportive mother who's trying to do everything to help me get into a college somehow. I don't want to give a number..it might make it seem as if I've given up hope.
