Well, @ the OP
If you want to build credit - start off with an secured card (usually 100% approval)
and then work yourself up.

For me, I started with a car loan @ 33k,
Secured Credit Card - $300
Unsecured Credit Card - $850
Amazon Store & Chevron Gas cards - $900/each

Now I have a $4000 AMEX.

This is all within 1 year

You can also use
Creditkarma.com to see your scores for free...

And nowadays, some credicards offer free FICO scores (the score that is most accurate)

Goodluck

Try Discover, they seem more lenient.
I literally had no credit history but I got a Discover It credit card (not student) on the first try.. with 3% starting APR and $1000 credit limit

I did have a checking account with Chase, owned a used car, and had auto insurance all on my name since 2007.. but idk how that helps since none of it was under my new SSN ..

Credit Agency need just two things to get started on making a credit file for you. Birthday and Name that is it. As soon they have these two things, there be a "credit" history for you that shows when you missed payments and any and all problems. There have been people thought here who have been surprised to see credit histories they never made, so if something happens, call all credit agency ( I think there are 3 big ones) to resolve those issues
