I'd recommend it if you were under 11-12 years of age and had no other family and overstayed your visa, but other than that no ! You would not only gain a 'green card' but US citizenship if the adoptive parent in question is a US citizen.Adoption is totally a State process not federal, once the process is complete then you may approach USCIS if the requirements of being under 16 and having a full and final adoption has been met.
My mother and father have my younger sister who will petition fro them as soon as she is of age, and what is the 2 year adopted child - adopted parent relationship you are referring to?

I'm 15, but from what i've been told the age only comes into play with the fact that all your adoption forms/paperwork has to be submitted and approved before i turn 16 to get permanent residency.

*Note my adoptive parent is a US citizen soo i think i would get Citizenship automatically

I wish I would have done this when I was still able. I had a chance, but it never occurred to me until it was too late.

Hey, if you have a younger sister, then ask your aunt to adopt both you and your sister.

The reason is that if your aunt adopt both of you, then the adoption paperwork only needs to be finalized before you are 18, not 16.

If your aunt adopts only you, then you need to finalize the paperwork before you turn 16.

Thanks ! But i would still like to know the process, which i'm trying to find out on the USCIS website but i can't seem to figure it out.

My parents are pretty desperate at this point, they're even thinking of divorcing so that one of them can remarry a US Citizen and give me citizenship before i graduate high school

just go talk to a lawyer whose specialty is in adoption. Then you'll have to go to court to finalize the adoption paperwork.

Then, the court will issue an adoption order. Then you could file the adoption order with the I-130 and I-485 to change your status to greencard holder. Then, you file the N-600 to get citizenship.

The adoption order must be issued before the cut off age.

Thank you soo much, i have one last question. Do you by any chance know how long the process up until the issuing of the adoption order is?

It could be very fast since your parents are in the US. Go talk to a lawyer. Start it as soon as possible. It'll be not less than 3 months.

i actually went through with it a few months before my sixteenth birthday.
it was going well. they had sent me a social security card with an authorization to work legally for a year.
things got complicated towards the end so it didn't happen (it's complicated so i'd rather not say why)

many lawyers weren't willing to take my case saying that i wouldn't be able to make it since i was so close to being 16. but we found one who said it was possible.

just to let you know. i think it was more than $10,000 using a lawyer.
since you're 15, it would be better if you used a lawyer. they would get things right and fast.
if you have any questions, just pm me.
