I have a friend who constantly says I need to marry our mutual friend because that way I won't have to leave the country. I keep saying I don't have to leave even if I don't marry a US citizen but apparently this little fact is hard to comprehend.

Honestly, I think the immigrant hating far right conservatives are a dying breed. Just look at what happened to their "American Spring" protest where the organizer promised he was going to bring in 1 million militia members along with other 9 million people to get president Obama and other officials to resign..about 150 people showed up. Just take a look at the crowd, all of them old, fat, and white. They have maybe 10-15 years tops left to live; after that we can finally have a better America. If what you're saying about the Chinese community kissing up to these people is true then I really feel sorry for them.

link to American spring protest so you can have a good laugh:

The world is not black and white. Just because somebody is a Republican doesn't necessarily mean he's heartless, racist, religious, or ignorant. My sister's in-laws are almost all conservative and solidly Republican, but on the personal level they are mostly ok.

The problem comes when people think more using labels than analyzing the actual issues, and unfortunately Republicans are usually more guilty of this groupthink. The word 'liberal' is so dirty among Republicans that once something or someone is labeled as such, most of them would ignore and dismiss it outright. If the star spangled banner is successfully labeled as 'liberal' they would pooh pooh it too. The word 'conservative' doesn't have nearly as bad a connotation among Democrats.

My personal approach is to not discuss label politics with family and friends, as nothing good can ever come out of it. I only discuss specific issues and the relative merits of the proposed solutions, i.e. get technical about it. I never show support for any particular party, only support toward reasonable and logical solutions regardless to who comes up with it.

I don't really talk about politics with friends or even relatives. Most girls aren't really interested in discussing politics. Plus, the average person is really dumb and doesn't know crap besides the BS they are fed from news channels.

I'm not saying Republicans are all bad as I'm sure many are socially moderate but just don't like paying taxes. In my universe however, the biggest issue for me is immigration reform. Sure, I believe in smaller government, but it doesn't matter if I wake up every morning knowing I'm an illegal. If a close Republican friend knows about how bad I'm suffering and they know that their Republican candidate is putting ads on TV about how tough he is on illegals and how he will vote no to amnesty, and that "friend" still votes for them so he can maybe have a little less taxes (which let's be honest, ain't gonna happen anyway), then that "friend" is a monster in my book.

It's one thing for someone who doesn't know me and my struggles to do that, but a friend or family member who happily votes for someone who wants to deport me is no friend.

I understand.

The thing is, they could be holding that position because they think you personally is the exception, that you're unique. All the other illegals are parasites who undermine the English speakers, so they keep supporting the populist and xenophobic Republican candidates.

In short, they would say "he's illegal, but he's ok".

Some of them are just plain ignorant. There's an elderly in-law that I'm pretty close to that makes me sad all the time, because she essentially repeats everything that Glenn Beck says like a parrot. The only 'news' that she watches comes from Beck. I'm sad because I know she is fundamentally a decent and compassionate person willing to go far to help others.

Yeah that's kind of like saying "I hate N*ggers but you're ok". Or "I think Hitler was right about the Jews, but you're ok" .
